64 Core/128 Thread AMD Ryzen Threadripper CPU Coming in Late 2019

Another report from WCCFTech claims that AMD is prepping a 64C/128T Threadripper for launch in the last quarter of 2019, making it the most powerful HEDT part in the market. At present, it’s AMD’s Zen+ Threadripper, the W2990X (32-Cores) that holds that title. However, it seems like the top-end processor is about to get a 2x boost in the thread count.

The new Threadripper will probably be priced in the sub-$3000 range making it the first 64 core part to come to the HEDT space. Recently, we saw the Ryzen 9 3950X decimating the 18C Intel Core i9-9980XE in Geekbench while packing lesser threads and costing less than half as much. However, it’s unlikely that this chip will be based on the newer 7nm Zen 2 architecture, as the Rome chips are already operating in that territory.

So we’re possibly looking at a Zen+ based CPU with a beefed up core count. Furthermore, the report mentions that the chip should run on the existing X599 platform while AMD will also launch a newer chipset with additional features (just like the X470 and X570).

As for the launch date, Q3 is already going to be packed with the Navi and Rome events, so we can expect a release in the last quarter of 2019, or perhaps early 2020. However, considering that the Zen 2 based Threadrippers are still pending AMD will probably want to wrap up the 14nm node this year itself.

These chips are going to be ideal for small-scale servers, workstations that need a lot of parallel processing power and last but not the least content creators who seem to keep running out of cores, no matter how beefy the CPU.
