AMD’s Navi 14 Based RX 5500 XTs Were Fabbed by TSMC, not Samsung

There have been rumors floating on the internet claiming that AMD’s recent RX 5500 XT GPUs might have been fabbed by Samsung. While the reasoning behind that is sound (TSMC is supplying Huawei, AMD, and Apple with their 7nm chips and supply has been tight), we’ve confirmed that that’s not the case. It turns out TSMC has been fabricating AMD’s RX 5500 XT GPUs in addition to the Ryzen 3000 as well as the RX 5700 series too.

Other than Samsung’s own 7nm Exynos chips, there are barely any other parts fabbed on Samsung’s 7nm tech. Global Foundries, on the other hand, doesn’t make 7nm processors at all (not any longer at least). This leaves TSC as the sole manufacturer of chips using the latest 7nm node. NVIDIA is expected to move to the same node later next year, and rumors claim that team green will be leveraging Samsung’s 7nm EUV process. While this is still a rumor, it’s a plausible one.

TSMC is already taking orders from a long list of clientele. It would be rather hard to supply to another major chipmaker. Whatever the case, we’ll only know the reality when the NVIDIA’s next-gen Ampere GPUs are launched.
