Intel has announced their first major AI processor: the Intel Nervana NNP-1. All of the previous chips were made in mWatt of power, but this is the first one to draw around-hundred watts of power.
The AI-inference market has been dominated by GPUs for quite a while now. This is because GPUs contain parallel processors which are perfect for inference. But now with Intel’s AI processor in the game, things seem to be looking up for the future of CPUs in the AI sector. Intel claims to have achieved 5x the performance compared to a tailor-made suite. This combined with appropriate pricing could mean that the AI market is headed towards some serious changes.
The Nervana processor is a major step up from Intel’s previous designs for the AI market. The company has managed to create a processor which consumes a hundred-thousand times more power than its predecessor. This sounds good on paper, but we can’t be certain until we see the official documentation.
Intel has partnered up with Facebook for the development of the chip and plans to introduce it in 2019.
