Intel, Qualcomm Join Google in the Battle Against Huawei Amidst Trade War

The Chinese company Huawei is having a tough time amidst Trump’s blacklist order. Major companies such as Intel, Qualcomm, and other chipmakers have joined Google in the Huawei boycott. The blacklist comes after the trade tariff escalation by the trump administration last week. Furthermore, several allegations on Huawei have been made over its ties with the Chinese government by the NSA and the FBI, and a national emergency has also been declared on that matter. This trade blacklist prevents anyone from buying Huawei products or dealing with Huawei without government approval.

The Google Boycott

Moments after the trade blacklist, Google ceased its business with Huawei, including the Android OS. The play services won’t be supported on the Huawei phones including the Google Play Store. The Chinese phone maker is now limited to use the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), without the Google updates. The phone models already sold will continue to run Google apps although the same cannot be said for future Android updates on the current devices.

Huawei

It seems like Huawei had been anticipating this move and by the likes of it, is working on its own OS – “Kirin OS”. The company is also developing its own 5G modem for future phones.

The chipmakers – Intel, Qualcomm have also ceased their businesses with Huawei following Google’s boycott. Huawei however, had been preparing for this eventuality and has been stockpiling chips that will last for at least 3 months after the ban.

It would be interesting to see how this trade war affects other Chinese phone manufacturers and Huawei’s upcoming “Kirin OS” stacked up against the OS giants.
