MediaTek Launches Gaming-Centric Helio G90 Series with HyperEngine

MediaTek has announced its latest flagship gaming-centric processors, the Helio G90 and G90T. The Taiwanese chip maker, although is quite prominent in the budget to mid-range devices, it still is fairly far behind its rival Qualcomm when it comes to premium flagship phones, mainly due to the superior performance and reliability of the Qualcomm processors.

Now, in a bid to shake things up a bit, the company is focusing on an upcoming segment in the smartphone business, the gaming phones. The Helio G90 and G90T use an octa-core CPU with clock speeds of up to 2.05 GHz. The CPU used are ARM Cortex A76 and Cortex A55 alongside ARM Mali- G76 GPU. The GPU can deliver speeds of up to 800MHz.

TL Lee, General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communication business unit said, “The mobile gaming market is growing and device makers are looking to give consumers and especially gaming fans the best smartphone game-play experience. That’s why we designed the G90 series, our combination of hardware and software delivers high performance, unrivaled image quality, uninterrupted connectivity to always stay in the game, and smooth responsive action even in the most demanding games. With the Helio G90 series, you get a super-fast and responsive display and reduced lag for smoother gameplay – because every millisecond counts in the game world. Whether it’s Fortnite, PUBG or other top titles, this chip is a gaming powerhouse.”

One of the defining features of the G90 series chips is the “HyperEngine” technology, which is claimed to improve the gaming performance of the phone. It is quite useful for online gaming specifically, as it has an advanced network predictor which optimizes internet connectivity. It ensures a seamless and lag-free experience by implementing quick transitions between Wi-Fi and LTE in case one of the signal breaks down.

When it comes to compatibility, the G90 and G90T will support up to 10 GB of LPDDR4X RAM with frequencies of up to 2133 GHz. For imaging, it’ll support up to 64 MP of either a single or multi-lens camera setup. In addition to this, the chip also has HDR10 and a “rapid response engine” which uses touch acceleration to make the phone more responsive and helps deliver a more fluid gaming experience.

MediaTek is aiming to crack a segment that is still developing in the smartphone market, a segment that is currently dominated by Qualcomm. It will hope that the next generations of the gaming phones like the Razer Phone, ASUS ROG Phone, Black Shark 2 or the Nubia Red Magic are powered by a MediaTek chip instead of Qualcomm. Yes, it’ll be tough for the Taiwanese chipmaker, but for a company as experienced as them, it shouldn’t be impossible.

  1. People liking MediaTek over any other chipset is the real win for them and I think G90 will be the most powerful set of all time.
