NVIDIA Strikes Back: Team Green Snatches Share from AMD Radeon in GPU Market, Courtesy of Turing Supers

In a rather unexpected turn of events, NVIDIA snatched a major chunk of the graphics card market from AMD, pushing the Radeon share below 30% in the DIY space. According to a report from Jon Peddie Research, Team Green and its Super graphics card outmaneuvered the Radeon Navi GPUs in markets worldwide. The overall gain is pegged at 5% which pushes NVIDIA’s share in the discrete GPU market share above 70%.

Last quarter, NVIDIA held on slightly more than 67% of the graphics card space, down by 6-7% compared to last year. This drop was attributed to the unsatisfactory prices of the original RTX cards and the introduction of the RX 5700 series from AMD. However, since then NVIDIA has buckled up and launched the Super variants of pretty much the entire Turing lineup. These are much more competitive than the original RTX cards and provide stiff competition to AMD’s Navi offerings.

While AMD has a decent product stack in the upper midrange space, the entry-level budget and top-end GPU markets are ruled by NVIDIA’s GTX 16 series and RTX 2080 Super, respectively. From what we can tell, Big Navi is still far away and Navi 14 is largely limited to the OEM space (with lackluster results).

It’ll be interesting to see how the discrete graphics card market shapes up in 2020. NVIDIA is said to make the move to 7nm EUV, AMD will launch its Navi 20 graphics cards with hardware-level ray-tracing support and Intel might just join the party with its Arctic Sound (Xe) GPU in the latter half of the year.
